Winter Solstice - The Year of the Melting

I was going to write "Solstice 2004", but in fact, that would be counting by a calendar to which I don't particularly subscribe.

Instead, this is a Solstice to remember the eternal cycle which has no regard for human time, does not mark the era by the birth of kings or ancient prophets. The cycle, the wheel, turns regardless of our zeal to stop it with incantations and "virgin births".

Indeed, the Sun (el Sol) is reborn today, a New Year born without a father, without a mother, even.
Ancient is the turning, and true Justice will come with the fall of the mighty, as is inevitable.

Ancient is the turning, and the yearning for the Light. The lessons of that great teacher are not lost on we who despise the acts done in his name: Look Within for the Light. Seek it not in the marketplace, nor in the fields, nor in words, but let it Shine, Shine, Shine like a beacon on the mountain, in your deeds, your thoughts, your Loving Kindness towards all sentient beings and your regard for Grandmother Earth who bears us all.

With All Best Wishes for the Coming Year
to my dear friends, companions, family, and fellow travelers in these 11 dimensions. [1]

Peter

The photo was taken at Fisterre, Galicia (Finis Terra, end of the earth), the final step of El Camino de Santiago.
This is the westernmost point on the European continent.

PS to my new friends in España, as this will be the first contact from me to some of you.
Whether I met you in Barcelona, on the train to Bilbao, in the pilgrim's bar A Casa das Crechas in Santiago de Compostela, the cozy home of Galician music at "A Cova Folk", "Casa da Lubre" or "A Cova Celtic" in A Coruña, in my favorite bar in Andalucia -- "La Bella y La Bestia", or the finest little hotel on the Rio Darro - Zaguan, the entryway, with its fine Philosopher's Bar[2] -- my thanks and warm regards!

¡Por favor, mis amigos! Escribeme y dime - ¿Como estas? ¿Que tal?!

Finally, the "Parlor Tricks" list is my personal mailing list. I'll occasionally send out notices of interest or political or cultural importance. If you don't want to receive these messages, please let me know and I'll remove you from the list!

(The name comes from an old Pogo comic strip by the great Walt Kelly, where after a series of unfortunate events and unintended consequences, Pogo says, "I didn't say anything about Politics, I said 'Learn some Parlor Tricks and have a Party!" Pogo is best known for "We have met the enemy and he is us." )
