Max the Cat Gets Away...

I hope Max had been neutered before he made the break....
The black cat probably suffered less in its acceptance of fate than Max did in the gutters for the rest of his life, which was probably short and not sweet.
I'm not a big fan of these kinds of analogies. Humans are challenged by very different kinds of challenges -- ALONG WITH the shared domain of organic instinctual genetic programs in common with all life.
Our challenges are not so much whether to "BE OURSELVES" at which we are already quite adept. Unfortunately, we end up making very poor decisions as "OURSELVES". We build our ego identities by risk taking. It is the risks which create memorable events around which identity crystalizes.
This is the nature of adolescence, and explains a lot about why it's such a difficult time for all involved! (There's also some great neuro-science being done on the transformation of the brain during this time.)
However, after adolescence, the perceiver must instead learn to take risks TO THE EGO (ie love, service, empathy) in order to open the doors of perception, and broaden into the light and understanding of Conscious Deliberate Awareness.
