fireflies!
I thought I saw a couple late last week, but have now verified that they are in fact back on the wing...
Also
today, I dispatched a small mountain of bull thistles, about which I
always have some mixed feeling. The goldfinches love the thistles, and
the gorgeous subtle purple flowers are such a perfect complement to the
greens of the background, and the intense yellow-oranges of the
coreopsis and other blackeyedsusany daisioid blooms. However, once they
go to seed, there's no controlling them, so I let the finches have a
couple off days with them and then go out and stalk their little fuzzy purple
heads. Into the burn pile, with the flower heads stuffed down under the
grate, since they will continue to ripen and go to fluff, blowing
around days after being pulled (pulled with a garden fork and serious
heavy work gloves. I take the entire plant out of the ground. The
Medusa must have been based on some kind of monster weed.)
