Heidelberg Windmill 21st Century Letterpress Master Class

Professional level instruction on just about everything you need to know about letterpress printing, from digital pre-press color separation, to trouble-shooting inking on the press.
Teaching at SlowPrint, Dubuque
Teaching at Slowprint, Dubuque, May 2013

SlowPrint's own master printer Peter Fraterdeus welcomes private students of letterpress and typography into SlowPrint's Dubuque studio for intimate three-to-five day intensive work sessions. One-on-one or small groups of up to six are welcome.

Endorsements from students

"Every aspect met my expectations and more...

Peter's passion, love for the history, and detail craftsmanship was infectious and came through while communicating techniques."

Q:What were the best aspects of the class for you?

The hands on. Actually running the press and problem solving. The best thing was having a two-sided project with an die cut... Multiple issues to problem solve. I was able to learn a lot in a very short time with these challenges which I wouldn't have if it was a simple one sided project... And the excellent coffee and fiddle playing!

"I was looking to learn more about the press and its operation as well as get an overview of the entire process from design to print and that's what I got. Peter was very open to questions and willing to take the class to whatever subjects each of the participants required."

All levels of training available on the Heidelberg Windmill, Miehle Vertical Cylinder, Vandercook, and C&P Platen. Pre-press techniques in Illustrator and InDesign, photopolymer plate-making, color matching and ink mixing, press maintenance, wood type, foundry type, paper treatments, problem solving, checklists, tips and tricks, etc.

Having gained mastery of the craft, these skills can be applied to any press we encounter.

We can also arrange to come to your studio or print center one-on-one hands-on consulting, training and troubleshooting.

University level seminars also available.

If you're interested in what we will cover, here's the complete syllabus (3 MB PDF download from Dropbox)
